Dumbbell Seated Calf Raise

Dumbbell Seated Calf Raise

CalvesDumbbells, Bench

A versatile home-friendly exercise that targets the soleus. Using dumbbells allows you to load each leg independently without a specialized machine.

How to do it

1Sit on the edge of a bench with the balls of your feet on a step and knees bent at 90 degrees.
2Place dumbbells vertically on your lower thighs near your knees, holding them secure with your hands.
3Lower your heels below the step level to get a full stretch through your calves.
4Drive up onto your toes as high as possible against the dumbbell weight.
5Pause for a second at the top, then control the descent back to the bottom stretch.

Common mistakes

Placing dumbbells too far back toward your hips, reducing resistance on the calves and overloading the thighs.
Skipping a foot block, which cuts the range of motion short and prevents a full muscle stretch.
Pulling up on the weights with your arms instead of driving strictly through the calves.

Breathing

Exhale as you press up onto your toes; inhale as you sink your heels down.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
