Dumbbell Romanian Deadlift
Hamstrings, Glutes, Lower BackDumbbells
The dumbbell RDL is a hip hinge that targets the hamstrings, glutes, and lower back. Builds the posterior chain with moderate spinal loading.
How to do it
1Stand tall holding dumbbells in front of your thighs, feet hip-width apart.
2Keep a soft bend in your knees and lock that angle throughout the set.
3Push your hips back and hinge forward at the waist, sliding the weights close along your legs.
4Lower to mid-shin level until you feel a solid stretch in your hamstrings.
5Drive your hips forward using your glutes to return to standing.
Common mistakes
Rounding upper or lower back — overloads the spine and increases injury risk.
Bending knees too much — turns the hinge into a squat and unloads the hamstrings.
Letting dumbbells drift away from legs — increases leverage on the lower back.
Breathing
Inhale as you hinge down and push your hips back, exhale as you stand back up.
Make it harder or easier
To make it easier, shorten the range of motion and lower only to knee level.
To make it harder, hold a 2-second pause in the bottom stretch position.
This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
