Dumbbell Punch

Dumbbell Punch

Delts, triceps, coreDumbbells

This exercise mimics boxing punches using light dumbbells. It strengthens your shoulders, triceps, and core while building endurance and coordination.

How to do it

1Stand in a stable stance with feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent.
2Bring the dumbbells up to your chin, keeping your elbows tucked close to your ribs.
3Punch one arm forward in a controlled motion, rotating your torso and pivoting on the ball of your back foot.
4Keep a slight bend in your elbow at the end of the punch—do not snap or lock out the joint.
5Pull the hand back to your chin and repeat with the other arm.

Common mistakes

Snapping or hyperextending your elbow at the end of the punch, which can injure the joint.
Punching with just your arms without rotating your torso, overloading your shoulders and losing power.
Arching your lower back, which disengages your core and strains your spine.

Breathing

Exhale sharply with every punch, and inhale as you pull your hand back to your chin.

Make it harder or easier

To scale down, use very light weights or perform the punches with shadowboxing (no weights).
To scale up, increase your pace or use slightly heavier dumbbells while maintaining perfect form.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
