Single-Arm Overhead Dumbbell Carry

Single-Arm Overhead Dumbbell Carry

Shoulders, Core, Rotator CuffDumbbell

Functional movement to build overhead strength, core control, and shoulder stability. Carrying a dumbbell overhead forces your whole body to maintain balance and posture.

How to do it

1Press a dumbbell overhead with one arm, fully locking your elbow and packing your shoulder joint.
2Stand tall with your core braced and glutes squeezed.
3Walk forward with deliberate, controlled steps.
4Keep your body upright without leaning to the side under the load.
5Cover the set distance, safely lower the weight, and repeat with the other arm.

Common mistakes

Arching your lower back, dumping tension onto your spine instead of bracing your core.
Letting your elbow bend, which tires your triceps and weakens your overhead stack.
Rushing your steps, making it hard to control your balance and alignment.

Breathing

Breathe steadily and deeply while keeping your abs firmly braced.

Make it harder or easier

Lighten the weight or shorten the distance to scale down.
Increase the time under tension by extending your carry duration.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
