Side-Lying Dumbbell Lateral Raise

Side-Lying Dumbbell Lateral Raise

ShouldersDumbbell, Bench

An isolation raise for the side delts performed lying sideways. This setup loads the muscle right from the very bottom of the rep—something standing raises can't do—giving you maximum side-delt building without spine stress.

How to do it

1Lie on your side on a flat or incline bench, resting on your bottom forearm for balance.
2Hold a dumbbell in your top hand, letting it rest in front of your thigh.
3Raise the dumbbell up in a wide arc, maintaining a slight bend in your elbow.
4Stop just before your arm reaches straight up to keep continuous tension on the muscle.
5Slowly lower the dumbbell back down, resisting gravity all the way.

Common mistakes

Raising the dumbbell past vertical, which completely unloads the muscle at the top.
Letting the weight drop quickly instead of controlling the negative phase.
Rolling your upper body backward as you raise the weight, shifting tension off your shoulder.

Breathing

Exhale as you raise the dumbbell up, and inhale as you slowly lower it back down.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, use a lighter weight or reduce your range of motion.
To make it harder, slow down the tempo, especially on the descent.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
