Couch Stretch

Hip FlexorsWall

This simple yet effective stretch releases tension in your hip flexors using a wall for balance and safety.

How to do it

1Face a wall about one step away. Step one foot forward and drop your back knee to the floor, placing a pad under it for comfort.
2Place your hands on the wall at shoulder height for stability. Make sure your front foot is flat and your front knee is directly over your ankle.
3Slowly shift your weight forward, driving your hips down and forward until you feel a gentle stretch in the front of your back thigh.
4Keep your torso upright without arching your lower back. Focus on feeling the stretch without any pain.
5Hold this position for 20-30 seconds, then slowly return to the starting position.
6Repeat on the other side.

Common mistakes

Excessive lower-back arching: Don't dump into your lumbar spine; keep your core engaged and your torso upright.
Underutilizing the wall: Use the wall confidently to maintain balance and control your stretch depth.
Sudden movements: Keep the stretch smooth and controlled—avoid bouncing to protect your muscles.
Holding your breath: Don't create extra tension. Keep your breathing steady and deep.

Breathing

Inhale to set up, then exhale slowly as you settle into the stretch. Breathe smoothly and steadily throughout.

Make it harder or easier

To scale down: Don't sink as deep into your hips, stay closer to the wall, and use extra padding under your back knee.
To scale up: Move slightly further from the wall to deepen the stretch, or hold for 45-60 seconds. You can also gently pull your back foot toward your glute if comfortable.
Progression: Once confident, try performing the stretch without holding the wall, maintaining your balance unassisted.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
