Calf Raise

CalvesBodyweight

Calf raises are a simple yet powerful exercise to build lower leg strength, boost endurance, and improve overall stability for walking and running.

How to do it

1Stand tall with feet shoulder-width apart, feet parallel, back straight, and eyes looking straight ahead.
2Slowly rise up onto your toes, pushing your heels as high off the floor as you can to fully contract your calves.
3Hold the top position for 1–2 seconds, keeping your balance and squeezing the muscles.
4Smoothly lower your heels back to the floor under control, keeping tension in the calf muscles.
5Repeat the movement with a steady rhythm and full control.

Common mistakes

Moving too fast or jerking: rushing through reps reduces muscle activation and increases injury risk.
Shortening the motion: failing to rise high enough or drop all the way down limits muscle engagement.
Losing balance or swaying: indicates weak stabilizers or poor control; hold onto a support if needed.
Shifting weight to the outer or inner foot edges: distribute your weight evenly across the ball of your foot.

Breathing

Exhale as you rise onto your toes. Inhale as you slowly lower your heels back down.

Make it harder or easier

To make it harder: perform single-leg raises or stand on a step to increase the range of motion and load.
To make it easier: lightly hold a wall or chair for balance, or use a smaller range of motion.
To build endurance: aim for higher rep counts with minimal rest between sets.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
