Cable Hip Abduction

Cable Hip Abduction

Glutes, Hip AbductorsCable Machine

An isolation movement to strengthen the gluteus medius and minimus. Improves pelvic stability and balance for running and walking.

How to do it

1Attach the cuff to your ankle, stand side-facing to the low pulley, and hold the frame for support.
2Shift your weight onto the standing leg, bending that knee slightly for stability.
3Exhale and raise your working leg straight out to the side in the frontal plane.
4Pause briefly at the top while keeping your torso completely still.
5Inhale and slowly lower your leg back to the starting position.

Common mistakes

Leaning your torso to the opposite side, shifting load from the glutes to the lower back.
Turning your foot upward, engaging the quads and hip flexors instead of the target glute muscles.
Swinging your leg with momentum, losing control and muscle focus.

Breathing

Exhale as you raise your leg out to the side. Inhale as you smoothly return to the start.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, lower the cable stack weight and reduce your height range.
To make it harder, pause for a two-count at the top of the lift.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
