Cable Russian Twist

Cable Russian Twist

ObliquesCable Machine

The cable Russian twist is a dynamic core exercise that targets the obliques under constant cable tension. It builds controlled rotational core strength.

How to do it

1Stand sideways to the cable machine, hold the handle with both hands, and step away to create tension.
2Set your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width, bend your knees slightly, and lock your hips in place.
3Extend your arms in front of you and rotate your torso away from the machine in a smooth motion.
4Pause briefly at the end of the rotation, feeling your obliques contract.
5Slowly return your torso and arms to the starting position under control.

Common mistakes

Rotating through your hips and knees instead of twisting purely through your torso.
Bending your elbows, which causes your shoulders and back to steal work from your core.
Snapping back to the starting position too quickly, risking lower back strain.

Breathing

Exhale as you rotate your torso away. Inhale as you return to the starting position.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, reduce the weight on the stack.
To make it harder, hold the peak contraction at the end of the rotation for a longer pause.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
