Cable Overhead Rope Triceps Extension

TricepsCable Machine

A cable machine overhead extension using a rope attachment. Constant cable tension isolates the triceps safely with minimal axial spine load.

How to do it

1Attach a rope to the low pulley, face away from the machine, and press the rope overhead.
2Step forward slightly to create tension and set a stable stance.
3Fix your elbows beside your head and lean your torso slightly forward.
4Extend your arms up and slightly out to fully contract your triceps.
5Slowly flex your elbows back behind your head, controlling the weight stack.

Common mistakes

Arching your lower back, shifting tension away from the triceps onto your back.
Letting your elbows drift around during the rep, breaking isolation.
Letting the weight stack pull your arms back violently, putting joint health at risk.

Breathing

Exhale as you extend your arms overhead, and inhale as you bend your arms back.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, drop the cable weight or step closer to the pulley stack.
To make it harder, hold the peak extension for two seconds on each rep.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
