Cable External Rotation (Facing Away)

Cable External Rotation (Facing Away)

Rotator cuffCable Crossover

An isolation exercise that strengthens the shoulder rotator cuff stabilizers. It improves shoulder control and reduces injury risk during heavy pressing.

How to do it

1Stand facing away from a cable machine with the pulley set at elbow height.
2Grasp the handle with your far arm and pin your elbow to your side, bent at 90 degrees.
3Rotate your forearm outward smoothly while keeping your elbow glued to your torso.
4Pause at the end range for a second, feeling the contraction behind your shoulder blade.
5Slowly return your forearm to the starting position in front of you.

Common mistakes

Flaring the elbow away from the body, which shifts load from the rotator cuff to the deltoids.
Using too much weight, causing you to rotate your torso and strain the lower back.
Letting the weight snap back quickly, removing tension during the eccentric phase.

Breathing

Exhale as you rotate outward; inhale as you control the return.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, reduce the weight or use a resistance band.
To make it harder, add a two-to-three-second pause at peak contraction.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
