Dumbbell Box Squat
Quads, Glutes, HamstringsDumbbells, Bench (or Box)
This dumbbell squat variation involves lowering under control until lightly touching a bench or box. It teaches proper depth and evenly distributes load across quads, glutes, and hamstrings.
How to do it
1Stand facing away from the bench with feet shoulder-width apart, holding dumbbells at your sides or shoulders.
2Initiate the movement by hinging your hips back and bending your knees while keeping a flat back.
3Lower smoothly until your glutes lightly tap the bench without relaxing your core.
4Pause briefly at the bottom without fully transferring your body weight to the bench.
5Drive firmly through your feet to return to the starting position under control.
Common mistakes
Dropping hard onto the bench and relaxing your back — creates unnecessary impact loading on the spine.
Letting your knees cave inward as you stand — increases strain on the knee ligaments.
Rounding your lower back at the bottom — reduces glute activation and overloads the spine.
Breathing
Inhale as you lower smoothly to the bench. Exhale as you stand back up to the starting position.
