Box Breathing
DiaphragmBodyweight
Box breathing is a simple, powerful technique to calm your mind, release tension, and reset your focus instantly.
How to do it
1Get comfortable: Sit upright or lie down, relaxing your shoulders and neck. Place one hand on your stomach if helpful.
2Inhale slowly through your nose for a 4-second count, feeling your belly rise softly.
3Hold your breath for a 4-second count at the top.
4Exhale slowly through your mouth or nose for a 4-second count, letting your belly fall.
5Hold empty for another 4-second count before your next breath.
6Repeat for 3 to 5 cycles or as long as comfortable, keeping the rhythm smooth and effortless.
Common mistakes
Shallow chest breathing instead of deep diaphragmatic belly breathing.
Rushing or over-holding, which creates discomfort and physical strain.
Forcing the air in or out instead of letting your breath flow naturally.
Letting your mind wander—stay fully locked in on the count and cadence.
Breathing
Equalize every phase: inhale, hold, exhale, and hold for the same count (e.g., 4 seconds). Use your diaphragm and keep your shoulders still.
Make it harder or easier
To scale down: If 4 seconds feels too long, start with a 3-second box count and build up gradually.
To scale up: Extend the count to 5 or 6 seconds per phase while keeping your body completely relaxed.
Experiment: Practice at different times of day (morning for sharp focus, evening to wind down for sleep).
This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
