Lateral Bench Step-Up

Lateral Bench Step-Up

Glutes, QuadsBench

Lateral bench step-ups are a unilateral exercise that strengthens the glutes and quads. The side stance targets hip stabilizers and demands greater balance.

How to do it

1Stand sideways to the bench with an upright posture and feet parallel.
2Place the foot closest to the bench fully onto its surface.
3Shift your weight to the working leg and drive through it to lift your body.
4Pause briefly at the top without placing full weight on your trailing leg.
5Lower yourself smoothly back to the floor under control.

Common mistakes

Pushing off hard with the trailing foot — robs the working leg of targeted load.
Letting your working knee collapse inward during the step — creates unwanted joint stress.
Slouching or losing balance while stepping up.

Breathing

Inhale before stepping up or while lowering down. Exhale as you drive your body up onto the bench.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
