Bench-Supported Dumbbell Side Bend

Bench-Supported Dumbbell Side Bend

ObliquesBench, Dumbbell

The bench side bend is an intense side-core isolation move. Supporting your legs on a bench lets you overload your obliques laterally with strict form.

How to do it

1Lie sideways on a bench, anchor your feet or hips for support, and hold a dumbbell in your top hand.
2Lower your torso sideways toward the floor to stretch your lateral core.
3Exhale and contract your obliques to lift your torso sideways up toward the ceiling.
4Pause for a second at the peak contraction without turning your hips or shoulders.
5Inhale as you smoothly lower your torso back down into the stretch.

Common mistakes

Twisting your shoulders forward or back, losing lateral alignment and straining your spine.
Jerking your body up with momentum instead of contracting your core muscles.
Dropping too far down into the stretch, placing stress on your lower back ligaments.

Breathing

Exhale as you crunch your torso sideways. Inhale as you lower your body back down under control.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, use your bodyweight only or support your upper body on your forearm.
To make it harder, increase the squeeze pause at the top of each rep.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
