Barbell Snatch
Quads, glutes, hamstrings, shoulders, backBarbell
The barbell snatch is a high-speed Olympic lift that explodes the weight from the floor to locked out overhead in one fluid motion. It develops coordination, speed, and total posterior chain power.
How to do it
1Approach the barbell, place your feet under the bar, and take a wide snatch grip.
2Lower your hips, flatten your back, and pull your shoulder blades back to set a tight starting position.
3Push through your legs to smoothly lift the bar off the floor, keeping it close to your shins.
4As the bar reaches mid-thigh, explode into full extension and pull yourself under the bar.
5Catch the barbell overhead with locked arms in a squat position and stabilize the weight.
6Stand all the way up to full lockout before lowering the bar under control.
Common mistakes
Rounding your back off the floor, placing severe shear stress on your spine.
Letting the bar drift out away from your body, losing leverage and missing the overhead catch.
Catching with soft elbows instead of punching up to a solid overhead lockout.
Breathing
Take a deep breath and brace before lifting off, hold through the explosive pull, and exhale once locked out overhead.
Make it harder or easier
To scale down, practice the movement phases using a PVC pipe or lift from blocks.
To scale up, add weight to the bar while keeping your pull technique seamless.
