Barbell Side Bend

Barbell Side Bend

ObliquesBarbell

This is an isolation exercise for the obliques performed standing with a barbell. It builds lateral trunk control and strengthens the sides of your waistline. Due to high axial loading on the spine, keep the weight moderate and prioritize strict control.

How to do it

1Rest the barbell across your upper traps and stand tall with feet shoulder-width apart.
2Softly bend your knees and lock your hips in place to eliminate lower-body movement.
3Smoothly bend your torso straight to the side, stretching the obliques on the opposite side.
4Lower until you feel a comfortable stretch without twisting or rounding your lower back.
5Contract your obliques to pull your torso back up to the vertical starting position.

Common mistakes

Rotating your hips or twisting your torso during the bend, transferring strain to your lumbar spine.
Bending too far sideways under heavy load, creating dangerous pressure on spinal discs.
Jerking the weight on the way up, reducing muscle engagement and straining connective tissue.

Breathing

Inhale as you bend your torso to the side. Exhale as you return to the upright position.

Make it harder or easier

To regress, use a lightweight technique bar or empty barbell. To progress, hold a one-second pause at the bottom of the movement.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
