Barbell Jump Shrug

Barbell Jump Shrug

Traps, Quads, Glutes, CalvesBarbell

An advanced plyometric movement that develops lower-body speed and upper-trap power. Demands strong balance and explosive drive from the hips and legs.

How to do it

1Hold a barbell with an overhand shoulder-width grip and stand tall.
2Dip into a shallow squat, pushing your hips back slightly with a flat chest.
3Explode upward off the floor by fully extending your hips, knees, and ankles into a jump.
4As you leave the floor, aggressively shrug your shoulders up to your ears with straight arms.
5Land softly on the balls of your feet, bending your knees to absorb impact.

Common mistakes

Landing on rigid, straight legs, transferring harsh shock into your joints and spine.
Bending your elbows during the jump, taking emphasis off the traps.
Rounding your back during the dip, which is unsafe under load.

Breathing

Inhale as you dip, then exhale explosively as you jump and shrug.

Make it harder or easier

To regress, practice rising rapidly onto your toes without leaving the ground. To progress, add weight while keeping landings soft.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
