Decline Barbell Bench Press
Lower Chest, Front Delts, TricepsBarbell, Decline Bench
A variation of the bench press performed on a decline. This angle targets the lower chest while reducing stress on the shoulder joints.
How to do it
1Anchor your legs under the leg pads and press your back and glutes flat against the bench.
2Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder-width and unrack it over your chest.
3Inhale and lower the bar under control toward your lower sternum, elbows at 45 degrees.
4Lightly touch your chest without letting the bar bounce, pausing briefly.
5Exhale and press the bar straight back up to the start position.
Common mistakes
Bouncing the bar off your chest, which risks injury and removes tension from the muscles.
Flaring your elbows out at 90 degrees, placing dangerous torque on the shoulders.
Lifting your hips or lower back off the bench, sacrificing stability and control.
Breathing
Inhale while lowering the bar to your chest; exhale as you drive the bar upward.
Make it harder or easier
To make it easier, reduce the weight or use an empty barbell.
To make it harder, hold a strict 2-second pause at the chest on every rep.
This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
