Band Overhead Squat

Band Overhead Squat

quads, glutes, shoulders, coreResistance Band

A challenging full-body exercise that demands coordination across the thighs, glutes, shoulders, and core. Holding a taut band overhead requires good thoracic mobility and scapular stability, driving functional strength and posture.

How to do it

1Stand on the band with feet slightly wider than shoulder-width, press the band straight overhead with fully extended arms, pull it tight.
2Lock your arms vertically, pull your shoulder blades down, and brace your core.
3Inhale as you sit into a squat, pushing your hips back and tracking your knees over your toes.
4Keep your arms locked straight overhead—do not let them drift forward over your face.
5Exhale, drive through your heels to stand back up, and maintain band tension throughout.

Common mistakes

Letting your arms collapse forward during the squat, shifting your center of gravity and straining your shoulders and lower back.
Knees caving inward on the drive up, stressing your knee ligaments.
Rounding your back at the bottom of the squat, losing spinal alignment under load.

Breathing

Take a deep breath in as you lower into the squat, and exhale smoothly as you push back up to standing.

Make it harder or easier

To simplify, use a lighter band or decrease your squat depth.
To increase difficulty, narrow your grip on the band to create stronger tension.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
