Band Overhead Press

Shoulders, TricepsResistance Band

The standing band overhead press targets your shoulders and triceps, building vertical pressing strength with smooth resistance and minimal axial load on your spine.

How to do it

1Step on the middle of the band with both feet, stand tall, and hold the handles at shoulder height.
2Point your elbows slightly forward and keep your core braced.
3Exhale and press the band straight overhead until your arms are fully extended.
4Avoid arching your lower back and keep your shoulders pressed down away from your ears.
5Inhale and smoothly lower the band back to your shoulders, maintaining tension throughout.

Common mistakes

Arching your lower back excessive, which places unnecessary stress on your lumbar spine.
Flaring your elbows straight out to the sides, increasing the risk of shoulder joint discomfort.
Cutting the movement short, which reduces shoulder muscle engagement.

Breathing

Exhale as you press the band overhead. Inhale as you lower it back to shoulder height under control.

Make it harder or easier

To make the press easier, step on the band with one foot instead of two.
To increase difficulty, use a thicker band or widen your stance.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
