Banded Lateral Step-Outs

Banded Lateral Step-Outs

GlutesResistance Band

An isolation exercise targeting the gluteus medius and minimus using a resistance band. Improves pelvic stability and hip control for walking and running.

How to do it

1Secure a mini-band around your shins or just above your knees and stand tall.
2Soften your knees slightly and shift your weight onto the supporting leg.
3Step your working leg out to the side in a controlled motion by squeezing your glute.
4Hold the peak squeeze for a second, then smoothly return your leg to the start position.
5Complete all reps on one side before switching to the other leg.

Common mistakes

Leaning your upper body to the opposite side, taking tension off the working glute.
Turning the working toe outward, engaging the hip flexors instead of the glutes.
Letting the band snap your leg back in without muscular control.

Breathing

Exhale as you step your leg out to the side and inhale as you return to the start.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, move the band above your knees or use lighter resistance.
To make it harder, use a heavier band and pause at peak abduction.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
