Banded Shoulder Distraction

Banded Shoulder Distraction

Shoulders, Upper BackResistance Band

A gentle resistance band distraction stretch to elongate the shoulder joint overhead, relieving upper-body tension and improving joint mobility.

How to do it

1Anchor a band above head height and loop your hand through the strap.
2Step back until you feel moderate tension on the band.
3Hinge slightly at the hips, letting the band gently pull your arm and shoulder up and back.
4Relax your shoulder muscles and let the stretch happen without forcing it.
5Hold for the required time, then ease off the tension and switch arms.

Common mistakes

Pulling too hard on the band, causing muscles to tense up defensively instead of relaxing.
Arching your lower back excessively, shifting tension away from the shoulder.
Snapping out of the stretch abruptly, which can trigger muscle spasms.

Breathing

Breathe deeply and calmly through your nose throughout the stretch, relaxing deeper into the shoulder with every exhale.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, step closer to the anchor point to reduce band tension.
To make it harder, step further back or turn your torso slightly away from the stretched shoulder.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
