Machine Back Extension
Erectors, glutesBack extension machine
The seated back extension machine isolates and strengthens your spinal erectors and glutes. It targets your lower back smoothly with minimal axial loading, making it great for gentle core strengthening.
How to do it
1Sit in the machine, press your back firmly against the pad, and secure your feet on the footrest.
2Adjust the roller pad so it sits comfortably at the level of your shoulder blades.
3Smoothly push back against the pad using your lower back and glutes.
4Pause briefly at the end of the movement without hyperextending your lower back.
5Return to the starting position under control, keeping tension on the muscles.
Common mistakes
Arching back too far at the top—this pinches your lumbar vertebrae.
Using jerky movements—this reduces muscle engagement and increases the risk of strain.
Letting your hips lift off the seat—this ruins the mechanics and takes the focus off the target muscles.
Breathing
Exhale as you push back, and inhale as you return to the start.
Make it harder or easier
To make it easier, reduce the range of motion or lower the resistance. To make it harder, add a pause at peak extension.
This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
