Ankle Dorsiflexion Mobilization

AnklesBodyweight

Ankle dorsiflexion mobilization is a simple drill designed to unlock ankle joint range of motion. Regular work improves squat depth and walking comfort.

How to do it

1Sit on the floor with one leg straight and the other knee bent with foot flat for support.
2Grasp the foot of your straight leg with both hands around the toes or midfoot.
3Gently flex and extend your ankle, pulling your toes toward your shin and pointing them back away.
4Transition into slow, controlled ankle circles in both directions, exploring full pain-free range.
5Feel the muscles and tendons around your ankle stretch and relax. Perform 10-15 reps per direction.
6Repeat the full sequence on your opposite leg.

Common mistakes

Jerking the joint: avoid fast, uncontrolled snaps to protect joint tissues.
Forcing past pain: work only within a comfortable, pain-free mobility range.
Ignoring one side: give equal focus to both ankles to correct asymmetric tightness.

Breathing

Breathe evenly and smoothly without holding your breath. Inhale on the release, exhale on the stretch.

Make it harder or easier

To regress: perform the exercise seated upright on a chair with your leg lifted.
To progress: apply light manual pressure with your hands at end ranges to deepen the joint stretch.
To progress: hook a resistance band around your foot to add pull as you flex.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
