Alternating Shoulder Reach

Alternating Shoulder Reach

Upper Back, ObliquesBodyweight

Alternating overhead reaches mobilize your thoracic spine and stretch your lats and waist. Performed side-to-side with arms high, this move releases stiffness and improves shoulder overhead range.

How to do it

1Stand tall with feet shoulder-width apart, back straight, and shoulders down.
2Reach both arms straight up overhead without crowding your neck.
3Reach one hand higher toward the ceiling, lifting that shoulder slightly and feeling a stretch along your side.
4Return to neutral and repeat on the other side.

Common mistakes

Arching your lower back as you reach, stressing your lumbar spine.
Shrugging both shoulders up simultaneously, dumping stress into your neck.
Jerking through the movement without core control.

Breathing

Breathe rhythmically: inhale as you reach up, exhale as you reset to neutral.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, reduce your reach distance or keep a slight bend in your elbows.
To make it harder, pause at peak reach for two deep breaths.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
